چکیده
Presented is a synoptic and mesoscale analysis of the June 11-12, 2001 bow echo storm event. The storm system originated in southern and central Minnesota during the afternoon hours of June 11, 2001, and spawned several tornadic supercells. The storms moved to the southeast into northwestern Wisconsin where the mesoscale convective system (MCS) gradually developed a line of intense radar reflectivity oriented from the southwest to the northeast. The storm was further enhanced as the MCS outflow became part of a dynamic flywheel associated with a 250 hPa jet located to the northeast of Wisconsin. At approximately 0100 UTC on June 12, 2001, the line of storms began to develop a bowed structure in the radar reflectivity known as a bow echo. Over the next four hours, this bow echo was further enhanced by a strong rear-inflow jet. The intense system-scale downdraft associated with this MCS created a severe straight-line wind storm called a derecho spawning wind gusts in excess of 70mph. _______________________________________________

A derecho-producing bow-echo event over the central United States on 8 May 2009 is analyzed based on radar observations and a successful real-data WRF simulation at 0.8-km grid spacing. Emphasis is placed on documenting the existence, evolution, and characteristics of low-level mesovortices (MVs) that form along the leading edge of the bowing system. The genesis of near-surface high winds withi...

The genesis of two mesovortices (MVs) within a real-data, convection-resolving simulation of the 8 May 2009 central U.S. bow echo system is studied. Both MVs form near the bow apex but differ distinctively in intensity, lifetime, and damage potential. The stronger and longer-livedmesovortex,MVa, stays near the bow apex where the system-scale rear-inflow jet (RIJ) is present. The descending RIJ ...

A midlatitude mesoscale convective complex (MCC), which occurred over the central United States on 23– 24 June 1985, was simulated using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS). The multiply nestedgrid simulation agreed reasonably well with surface, upper-air, and satellite observations and ground-based radar plots. The simulated MCC had a typical structure consisting of a leading line ...

The midlevel kinematic characteristics of two supercell thunderstorms observed during the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX), one tornadic and the other nontornadic, are compared using airborne pseudo-dualDoppler wind retrievals. The most significant difference between the two cases was that a midlevel rear-inflow jet was observed in the nontornadic superce...
